With the mass oath taking of various Manila based politicians to the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) in Davao City yesterday, the full realignment of the formal party system (whichever way we understand it) has already taken place.
This party, ostensibly led by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte has completed the quickest rise of any political party from relative obscurity as a long time regional political aggrupation of largely ignored, bisaya speaking "bukid" dwellers, to a national political party that has drawn the children of old Manila politicians (yes, take a look at their names) all the way to far off Davao to say their "I Do`s" to the emergent power from the South.
This big launch serves as a strong indication of the party`s new and astute capabilities, not the least of which included the come from nowhere toppling of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
This has redrawn party lines and created what in real terms are a new dispensation, the ruling PdP Laban and this new HNP becoming the two contending parties. Are they a new majority and minority?
As HNP rises, everyone in the party continuum left out of this new alignment is bound to head for the margins, as we can now see what remains of the Liberal Party and its left leaning friends counting what few allies (and financiers) will be left in the run up to the important 2019 elections. Without a clear strategy for victory, and an ability to bolster their numbers and support base, their chances in 2019 are not improving as they claim.
Whats worse is they anointed a leader in Vice President Leni Robredo whose vision and capabilities are clearly unable to make political hay for the barn. Her statements register late and don`t resonate with voters as evidenced by her struggle in the trust and performance surveys. Had they hit their mark, these number would have improved.
As these develop, we can hear their already decimated ranks gnashing their teeth. Its May 2016 all over again for them, and they find themselves quickly outfoxed by another Mindanaoan Mayor.
