STATEMENT OF SOCIOECONOMIC PLANNING SECRETARY ERNESTO M. PERNIA ON THE FAMILY BUDGET ISSUE
Jun 08, 2018
I understand and regret that there are those who were dismayed by the budget figures presented in a press conference last June 5, 2018. Allow me to point out that there was no mention of a decent budget for a family.
In the said press conference, Undersecretary Rosemarie G. Edillon used the example of PhP 10,000 to illustrate the impact of the May 2018 inflation rate on a family’s budget. The practicality of the PhP 10,000 sample budget is that it is easy to multiply by any number (e.g. 2x, 3x, … 10x) depending on the actual budget of a family.
This is not to disregard the reality that many Filipinos work tirelessly to provide for their families. That is why NEDA is doing everything it can to push for needed reforms to raise the quality of life for all.
Again, please be clarified that the figure cited was only a sample budget.
Unfortunately, one report mistakenly labelled the figure as a decent budget for a family of five—possibly the result of misunderstanding, taking things out of context, or plain misreporting.
We will be working closely with our partners in the media so that, together, we can better explain economic issues affecting people’s lives.
NEDA is one with Filipino families aspiring to lead better lives.
